Body Phantom

With the rapid development of digital technology, smart devices are widely used to track and quantify personal data, and people can understand, manage and express themselves through data. This project examines how individuals are deconstructed into identifiable, quantifiable digital forms within technological systems. Algorithms capture only partial dimensions of the body but control its representation and value. A cycle of reconstruction occurs between the physical and data selves, where the body is tracked, scored, and externalized rather than perceived or experienced. Ultimately, this process leads to technological alienation.

Wei Li is a digital artist whose practice spans animation, experimental video, and narrative installation, focusing on the power dynamics between the body and technology. Her recent project “Body Phantom Under Quantitative Indicators” delves into the logic of self-quantification, revealing how the body is transformed into a visible and optimisable object under algorithmic norms. Through fragmented structures and immersive visual language, her work explores the tension between embodied perception and the demand to be seen, reflecting on how the body gradually yields to algorithmic preference—and how this shift erodes one's grasp of lived experience. Her practice investigates how data, algorithms, and intelligent devices reshape bodily perception and redefine subjectivity.
