Memory Trap

Memory Trap focuses on "uncertainty of memory" - exploring how memory loss caused by head surgery affects an individual's sense of existence and identity. When patients piece together their memories through third-party images, it can cause confusion about their own existence and emotional breakdown. This work is centered on VR digital interaction, allowing viewers to wander in a memory trap formed by hospital scenes and playgrounds in old photos, prompting them to search, identify and re-examine themselves. When the audience continues to increase their trust in "false memories", they will become their own "real memories." I hope that patients will be healed from the work and get out of the confusion.

Yicheng Lu

My undergraduate background in fashion design and my experimentation with costume design have led me to think about the relationship between identity, the body and social narratives, and the communication between the human and the self. Digital Direction at RCA has further expanded my possibilities in digital art, and immersive experiences are something I would like to explore.
My current projects explores the relationship between Tianjin aunties with updos and feminism, the reconstruction of self-existence and nihilistic cognition in brain-damaged patients after memory loss, and the uncertainty and plasticity of memory. I tried the immersive experience brought by interaction and VR, allowing the audience to re-examine the meaning of "existence" at the intersection of virtual and reality.
